How to Play


This page lists all xiangqi pieces with interactive boards. You can click on the pieces or start to drag them to visualize and play moves on each test position.

This page renders the boards with "romanized" (or "westernized") piece style by default (assuming people who want to learn the game might not be familiar with the Chinese characters yet), but you can change the piece style in the setting manager at any time:

Moves


General (帅 / 将)

The General moves one step orthogonally and must stay in the palace.

It is represented by the letter K in FEN.

Advisor (仕 / 士)

The Advisor moves one step diagonally and also stays in the palace.

It is represented by the letter A in FEN.

Elephant (相 / 象)

The Elephant moves two points diagonally, cannot jump, and cannot cross the river.

It is represented by the letter B in FEN.

Horse (傌 / 馬)

The Horse moves one point orthogonally then one point diagonally outward. It can be blocked if the orthogonal square is already occupied.

It is represented by the letter N in FEN.

Chariot (俥 / 車)

The Chariot moves any distance orthogonally (like a rook).

It is represented by the letter R in FEN.

Cannon (炮 / 砲)

The Cannon moves like a Chariot, but captures only by jumping over exactly one piece.

It is represented by the letter C in FEN.

Soldier (兵 / 卒)

Before crossing the river, a Soldier moves forward one point. After crossing, it can also move one point horizontally.

It is represented by the letter P in FEN.

Variants


Manchu Super Chariot (M)

In the Manchu variant (also called Yitong), Red has a single super chariot that combines the powers of chariot, horse, and cannon.

It is represented by the letter M in FEN.
