Hu Ronghua (胡荣华)


Hu Ronghua, born on November 14, 1945 in Shanghai, is a Grandmaster of Chinese chess, a major founder of the contemporary Chinese chess school, a national-level chess coach, and one of the most outstanding Chinese chess players of the 20th century. He is known as "Commander Hu".

In 1960, Hu Ronghua won the championship in the first national competition. Until 1979, he won the national championship for 10 consecutive times. From 1983 to 2000, he won the National Individual Championship four times. In 1982, the State Sports Commission awarded him the title of Chinese Chess Grandmaster and awarded him the Sports Medal of Honor. In 1988, he was awarded the title of Chinese Chess International Grandmaster by the Asian Chess Federation. In 2003, he led the Shanghai Jinwaitan team to win the first National Chess League A championship of the "Millennium Silver Lychee Cup". On September 29, 2006, Hu Ronghua won the championship in the National Chess Ranking Tournament, setting a new record in the history of Chinese chess for winning the championship at the age of 60. It was also the 15th time he had won the National individual Championship since he first ascended to the national championship throne at the age of 15.
